@OP you're gonna end up needing to because we can't have anything good on the Web anymore. cloudflare sucks though, they'll decrypt content and will be able to snoop on posters IP's which is not that fun. maybe try some self-hostable DDoS protectors first but really you're probably doomed. FUCK

dont do it until you need it. If no ones ddosing you or flooding the site with bullshit, no need to be overprepared. This is not a mission critical website right? Little downtime is always acceptable for hobby projects, cloudflare is less so. Having said that i had cloudshit from day one just bc i bought the domain name from cf. So maybe dont listen to me lmao

I recommend you stay on a simple system of a sane captcha (just build one yourself) and a simple rate limiting mechanic. Keep things simple and comfy. Cloudflare comes in when all else is lost and its near "It's over" status. @admin
